“Vanitas Machine” is positioned on the altar of the church (Trinitatiskirche Cologne). It´s a construction with a compressor and a bell jar under which a candle is burning. Verena Friedrich aims at prolonging life. Whenever the candle is just about to go out, a small amount of fresh oxygen is supplied. One can hear the breathing of the machine which ironizes the wish for eternal life in a subtle way.”
